✔️PARK & RIDE – Great news for our beleaguered Taunton retailers, town centre and hospital workers, as well of course residents locally and further afield.
Although the ‘official’ press release will not be until this afternoon, I’m thrilled to share this news from SCC received this morning.
“From the 9th August Park and Ride passengers will travel for free. This includes travel from both Park and Ride sites.
The Saturday Park and Ride service will be introduced from 14th August 2021. Please note a service will operate on the 7th August to support the Taunton Flower Show
The introduction of the free fare model is proposed to encourage passengers back on the Park and Ride service during the recovery period from Covid, which has seen patronage levels fall to very low numbers particularly during the peaks of the pandemic which led to national lockdowns. This move to encourage the use of the Park and Ride service is also in support of the climate emergency agenda, promoting alternative to car based travel when commuting into Taunton.
Furthermore, in light of the recent announcement in relation to the road works and closure at Toneway and Creech Castle, this proposal will also help to alleviate associated congestion issues which will arise from this scheme. Whilst it is intended that free fares will be in place until the end of the Creech Castle works (Summer 2022) this will be reviewed and considered as part of the Council’s budget setting process.”
