For next month’s Community News article (Sept 2018), I think it is fitting to report on the ownership change of the Bishop’s Hull village shop and butchers.

In July 2018 ownership of the village stores and butchers moved from the Popes who are retiring, to new owners Tom and Tane Parker.
The great news is that the Parkers intend to carry on trading, thus retaining our local village shop, post office and butchers.

During their time at the village stores, Linda and Tim have been the heart and sole of our village, nothing was ever too much trouble. Even when it came to selling, they held out for the right buyer who would carry on the business, when it would surely have been easier to find a purchaser who wanted to convert the premises into residential accommodation.

How did it all start for Tim?
Very much a local man, Tim was born in Taunton and attended the old Bishop’s Hull primary school in Gypsy Lane, as did his twin daughters Tracey and Laura after him.
The twins still live in the village. Tracey (with daughter Erin) and Laura who has two children Toby and Jasmin with her husband Jamie.
Straight from school, Tim worked for shirt-maker’s Frederick Theak, before going on to A.J. Baker of Comeytrowe in the early ’70s.
After a brief move to Bournemouth and working as an HGV lorry driver. Tim married Linda in 1975, the couple with their young children then moved to Bishop’s Hull in 1977.

It was back in 1987 that Tim started work at our village butchers, when it was called Williams & Smy.
In 2000, whilst working as ‘live in’ caretaker/gardener at the Frank Bond Centre, the Popes were given the opportunity to buy the butcher’s business, which they did, did and renamed it Bishop’s Hull Butchers.

In 2009, the Post Office next door to the butcher’s shop closed and sadly remained so for 3 years. Understandably, there was much public outcry at the need for it’s return.

The Popes decided to purchase the whole building in 2012 and early the following year in a very public spirited gesture, they re-opened the Post Office/Shop alongside their existing Butchery business. I doubt we’d have this essential village facility now, had they not stepped in.
Linda and Tim would like to wish the Parkers all the very best for the future and ask that you continue to support your local village shop.

To show their appreciation to the village for supporting them over the years, Linda and Tim are holding a Hog Roast for the residents of Bishop’s Hull in the Church Hall, at midday on Saturday 15th September 2018.
